Building your own chess set
Buying the pieces and the board separately lets you choose each element: weighted pieces for comfort, a roll-up board for travel, or the other way round. It is also the answer when a set has lost pieces or a board has been damaged. The only rule to follow is matching the size of the pieces to the size of the squares.
Matching pieces and board
The safest guide: the base of the king should cover about three quarters of a square. Some combinations that work:
- 6.4 cm king: squares of about 3.7 to 4 cm, 34 to 35 cm board.
- 7.5 to 8 cm king: 4.5 to 5 cm squares, 43 cm board.
- 9.5 cm king: 5 to 5.7 cm squares, 48 to 52 cm board, the tournament size.
- 11 cm king: squares of 5.7 cm or more, 51 cm board at the very least.
The pieces
Our Staunton pieces come in wood or weighted plastic, with a king from 6.4 to 11 cm. Several sets include 2 extra queens, very handy for pawn promotions. For something out of the ordinary, see our themed sets and pieces.
The boards
Our roll-up chess boards in PVC, faux leather or rubber range from 34 to 52 cm, with coordinates on the edges. Light and washable, they are the boards clubs use. To store everything, add a carry bag; to play to a time control, a chess clock.
